Welcome to the Newborn Course!
Anticipating a newborn in the coming weeks? You’re in the right spot! Welcome to my comprehensive newborn course, full of advice to give you support as you learn the ins and outs of feeding, skin care, and safe sleep. There’s nine modules offering an overview of the most common issues and questions. We’ll also go over common diagnoses to look out for in the first few weeks of life, and which warrant medical attention.
Module 1: Newborn Nursery
We’ll introduce the treatments and screenings that occur in the newborn nursery, what decisions you’ll need to think about ahead of time, and give an overview of healthcare team members that you’ll interact with.
Module 2: First Two Weeks
After discharge from the hospital, you’ll end up learning new routines for feeding, diaper changes, and infant sleep. While it feels overwhelming, you can tackle it! Here’s a general overview of what to expect, including doctor’s visits you may attend during this time.
Module 3: Breast/Chest-Feeding
While breast/chest-feeding feels like it should come naturally, it sometimes is really challenging to get the hang of, for parent and newborn! Here’s some advice to set you up for success, and resources for more help if you’re struggling.
Module 4: Formula-Feeding
There’s so many different formulas on the market that it can get really challenging figuring out which is the right fit for your newborn. In this module, I review the most frequently used starter formulas as well as how to troubleshoot other options for common medical issues.
Module 5: Jaundice
Jaundice is really common in the first few weeks of life, and is the most frequent medical issue leading to testing and follow up visits that we’ll typically see. Here’s more information of what it is and what treatment may look like if levels get too high.
Module 6: Umbilical Cord Care, Granulomas, and Hernias
The umbilical cord stump stays attached for about two weeks, and there’s lots of questions about how to take care of it to avoid infection. Here, we review cord care, as well as touch on what granulomas and hernias are and how they’re treated.
Module 7: Diaper Rashes
A common skincare issue in newborns is diaper rashes, which can sometimes be really challenging to manage. This module gives an overview of good diaper hygiene, which ointments to consider for treatment of rashes, and when to seek further care from your PCP.
Module 8: Safe Sleep
Safe sleep is a really important topic in newborn anticipatory guidance, though there’s a lot of cultural variance in this topic depending on country of origin. In this module, we try to review sleep in a non-judgmental way.
Module 9: Fussiness & Colic
Infants are often fussy! Sometimes it’s colic, though other times it can be related to sleep, gassiness, or other reasons that we can try to troubleshoot. This module offers a step-by-step approach for how to tackle this daunting issue.
